Rethinking Nuclear Weapons is a project to explore the realities of nuclear weapons. Designed to avoid preconceptions and ingrained biases, it tries to focus on actual experiences and practical consequences.

    The writings and thoughts here are based on twenty-five years of study and writing. They reflect conversations with some of the smartest people dealing with these issues today.

    Nuclear weapons are strange and unknown in many ways. They bring unexpected intellectual difficulties in their wake. One of the striking lessons of the Cold War is that nations do not think clearly while under threat. In order to understand nuclear weapons realistically and to avoid mistakes that might cost many, many lives it is necessary to think carefully and hard about them now.
