Prize

I am still too breathless and overwhelmed to put fully-formed thoughts down on the page. So I'll have to write more fully about this tomorrow. But yesterday Stephen Schwartz of The Nonproliferation Review called to tell me that I had won the Doreen and Jim McElvany Nonproliferation Challenge Essay Contest. The contest drew entries from a dozen countries and in the US from people in twenty-four different states. The essay I wrote is called "The Myth of Nuclear Deterrence," which I've talked about a little bit here before. The contest has a prize of $10,000.00 for the first place winner.

I am moved and excited and a little bit incredulous. It is a marvelous, marvelous thing. I'll tell you more tomorrow. The official announcement is here.

Congratulations, Ward! It couldn't happen to a more deserving person. By working outside the establishment, even if it is the disarmament establishment, you're an inspiration to us all as well as proof that a maverick, if he or she works as hard as you, can have an impact.

Here's to you and a nuclear-free world.
